ZIPS
ZIPS UN DONE
Zip
Styles
Coil Zips
use the toothed elements of helical coils of polyester as the fastening
system. The opposing elements of the exposed coil interlock with each other
to form the closure.
These products are widely used because of their inconspicuous appearance
when incorporated into the finished product and their ability to mould
around corners without buckling out. The coils will generally not break an
industrial sewing machine needle if stitched over, which allows bar tacking
as a method to close one end of the zip.
Moulded
Chain Zips
are made from delrin plastic compounds and have a larger bulk than coil
zippers. These zips have individually moulded teeth that interlock and are
injection moulded onto pre-woven, dyed tape. They have a degree of self
lubrication and tend to be slightly sturdier than an equivalent size of coil
zipper. They handle water and impurities better than a coil zipper, and are
a popular choice for outdoor applications, eg: tents and boats.
Some zip teeth are also made from metal – usually brass or aluminium for
clothing applications. Coil Zip can also be made into a water resistant zip
by reversing the zip and coating the tape.
MEASUREMENT
Measuring a zip is done on all styles by measuring the extremities of the
zip teeth, both in length and width, without measuring the tape.
GLOSSARY
Zips are made up out of three major parts:
Tape - Teeth - Slider
Tape
- generally made out of polyester but can be manufactured out of other
materials. The tape is used to join the zipper chain to an item
Teeth
- The zip teeth are the backbone of a zip and join together when a slider is
passed over them.
The slider - connects or separates the teeth when the slider is closed or
opened.
The puller - moves the slider body up and down.
Top Stops
- Stop the slider from continuing past the zip teeth
Bottom Stop
- Is used on closed end zips to prevent the slider from running off the zip
teeth
OPEN END
ZIP–
a separating unit made with a box and pin mechanism. The pin is placed onto
the end of one side of the teeth and is placed into the box which is on the
other side of the tape.
DOUBLES
A double
open ended zip has two sliders and can be opened from either end. Both
sliders are at the bottom of the zip when to allow the zip to separate
completely.
A double
slider has 2 pullers, common on tents and covers where it is necessary
to be able to open and close the zip from both sides.
USING CONTINUOUS ZIP cut
the zip to the length required plus 1".
Separate
the zipper teeth for about two inches. Pull the slider onto the tape and
align ends of the tape. Coil Zips have a top and bottom so make sure that
the sliders are the correct way. It is necessary to sew the zip ends so
that the slider can not then come off.
