The Science

How Ventile® Works

No coatings. No membranes. Just extraordinarily tight cotton weave and natural physics.

Dry Conditions

Open & Breathable

Cotton fibres sit in their natural state. Air moves freely through the weave — comfortable and breathable during activity.

Wet Conditions

Tight & Water-Resistant

Cotton fibres absorb moisture and swell — closing the gaps in the weave. Water is naturally repelled without any coating.

Silent — no rustle

The Story

A Legacy Woven in Lancashire

Born out of necessity in wartime Britain, Ventile has become the benchmark for high-performance natural fabric.

1930s — Manchester

The Discovery

Scientists in Manchester develop a cotton so compactly woven that it prevents water ingress through sheer density of weave — without any treatment or coating.

WWII — RAF Service

The Test of War

Ventile is adopted by the RAF for immersion suits for air-sea rescue operations. It provides crucial extra minutes of survival in cold North Sea waters, saving countless pilots.

Post-War

Outdoor & Expedition

Explorers and mountaineers adopt Ventile for extreme expeditions. Its combination of breathability, weather resistance and silence makes it unmatched for serious fieldwork.

Today — Chorley

Still Made in England

Ventile continues to be woven on specialist looms in Chorley, Lancashire. Point North Profabrics is the authorised UK & European distributor for cut lengths.

Choosing Your Weight

Single vs Double Ventile

Both offer Ventile's signature performance — the right choice depends on your end use.

Single Layer

Single Ventile

The classic choice. One tightly woven layer of long-staple cotton delivering excellent all-round performance for active use in variable conditions.

  • Lighter weight — ideal for active garments
  • Maximum breathability for high-output activity
  • Suitable for general outdoor and heritage use
  • Wider colour range available
  • Lends itself to tailored and bespoke garments
Double Layer

Double Ventile

Two bonded Ventile layers for significantly enhanced water resistance. The choice when conditions are severe and there is no compromise.

  • Greatly increased water resistance
  • Heavier — suited to outer shells and workwear
  • Exceptional durability and longevity
  • Preferred for bushcraft and survival applications
  • Military and heritage specification garments
